Monterrey Takes Game One, 22-14

In another hard-fought battle between the Baltimore Blast and Monterrey La RaZa, La RaZa earned a 22-14 victory in Game One of the 2010 MISL Semifinals Sunday night.  The teams will play each other again Monday night at 1st Mariner Arena with the winner advancing to face the Milwaukee Wave in the MISL Championship game. Monterrey's Armando Teran scored the final three goals of the game to give La RaZa a lead late in the third quarter and clinch the Game One victory.

The Blast jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and then to an 8-2 lead at the end of the first quarter but the second quarter featured the expected-in-this-series red card and forward Carlos Garcia was ejected from the match.  With the Blast bench down a man, La RaZa battled back, cutting Baltimore's lead to 8-6 at halftime.  Baltimore's Rookie of the Year candidate Max Ferdinand scored his first postseason goal to start the second half and the Blast extended their lead to 10-6 but Monterrey stayed in the match and tied it at 12-12 and then at 14-14.  Teran scored with four seconds remaining in the third quarter to give La RaZa its first lead of the night and sealed the win with two three-point goals against Baltimore's sixth attacker in the final quarter.

Game Two of the series will be played Monday night at 1st Mariner Arena.  A Blast win would force a Golden Goal Mini Game following the conclusion of Game Two to determine which team advances to the Championship Game; if the series goes to the Golden Goal Mini Game, Garcia will be eligible to play in that game after serving his one-game suspension in Game Two.

Notes:
* Machel Millwood led the Blast with three goals
* Forwards Rod Dyachenko and Adrian Bumbut did not travel to Monterrey but will be available Monday night for Game Two.
* Garcia has to sit out Game Two of the series due to the red card he received Friday.
* The 2010 MISL Championship will be played Sunday, April 4 in Milwaukee.

The Blast led the season series against La RaZa, 4-2, although La RaZa outscored the Blast, 68-67, in those six games. The Blast is 9-5 all-time against La RaZa in the regular season but has won just two of the seven games played in Monterrey. The Blast is 7-0 against La RaZa in games played in Baltimore. The teams have now met twice in the postseason with the Blast previously earning a 14-11 victory in the 2008 MISL Championship.
