In their first overtime game of the season, the first-place Baltimore Blast defeated the Chicago Riot, 16-13, Sunday night at the Odeum Sports and Expo Center in Chicago. Max Ferdinand scored two goals in the game, including the game-winner, six minutes into the extra period. The Blast, 14-3 on the season is on an eight-game win streak and has three regular season games remaining and is battling for the regular season title and the right to host the 2011 MISL Championship.
The Riot jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Machel Millwood scored Baltimore's first goal of the night to cut the Riot's lead in half late in the first quarter. Ante Cop, who scored the Riot's game-winning goal against the Blast on January 16, scored the first goal of the night and Fred Degand added a goal to make it 4-0 before Millwood put the Blast on the scoreboard.
Matt Watson scored two goals in the first four minutes of the second quarter to tie the game at 4-4 and give the Blast a 6-4 lead but the Riot scored the next two goals to tie the game and regain the lead, 8-6. Semir Mesanovic scored to tie the game at 6-6 and Eric Duda but the Riot back on top.
Ferdinand scored a power play goal in the third minute of the third quarter to tie the game again, this time at 8-8, but much like in the second quarter, the Riot continued to fight and Marojevic scored his second goal of the game to put Chicago back on top, 11-8.
Alex Megson gave the Riot a 13-8 lead early in the final quarter but the Blast fought back to tie the game and force the overtime period. Warren Ukah cut the Riot lead to 13-11 with a three-point goal and Machel Millwood tied the game at 13-13 with a three-point goal.
Ferdinand's second goal came at the 5:15 mark of overtime.
The Blast, 14-3 on the season, have won their last eight games and return to 1st Mariner Arena Friday night to host the Riot. Baltimore needs just one more win to claim the 2010-11 MISL regular season title and host the 2011 MISL Championship Game.
