In the most anticipated game of the first half of the 2011-12 MISL season, the Blast beat the Wave, 9-4, in Milwaukee on New Year's Eve. The game, a rematch of the 2011 MISL Championship, featured the top two teams in the league and was another hard-fought battle between Baltimore and Milwaukee.
Max Ferdinand and Pat Healey led the Blast to their eighth win of the season and seventh win on the road. With the Wave leading 4-0 late in the first quarter, Ferdinand scored to make it 4-2 and then provided an assist to rookie J.T. Noone in the second quarter to tie the game at 4-4. Stephen DeRoux scored Baltimore's third straight goal to put the Blast on top for the first time and Pat Healey scored a late three-pointer against the Wave's sixth-attacker offense to clinch the 9-4 victory.
It was a low-scoring but hard-fought affair as the Blast and Wave combined for just six goals and 11 penalty minutes. Giuliano Oliviero and Nick Perera scored the first two goals of the game to give the Wave the early 4-2 lead.
The Blast is led by Machel Millwood (30 points) and Max Ferdinand (28 points) while goalkeeper Sagu is 7-3 on the season. Noone now has seven goals on the season. The win was forward Matt Watson's last Blast game - the team will release Watson on January 1 in order to allow him to sign with Vancouver Whitecaps FC of Major League Soccer.
The rivalry between Baltimore and Milwaukee dates back to the 1992-93 season when the teams played each other for the first time. Since the 2002-03 season, the road to the MISL Championship has gone through the Blast and Wave five times and the teams have combined to win 10 of the last 14 league championships with each team winning five titles in that time period.
