Wave Come up Big in 22-8 Win Over Blast

In the most anticipated game of the second half of the 2011-12 MISL season, the Central-Division-leading Milwaukee Wave beat the Baltimore Blast 22-8 at Milwaukee's U.S. Cellular Arena Saturday night.  The loss, Baltimore's worst of the season, snapped a four-game win streak.

The Wave scored early and often, jumping out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead before Pat Healey put the Blast on the scoreboard in the seventh minute of the second quarter.  Trailing 14-2, the Blast held the Wave scoreless for the rest of the quarter and cut the lead to 14-4 on a Mike Lookingland goal just 29 seconds into the second half.  Any thoughts of a comeback were set aside midway through the third quarter when Wave leading scorer Greg Howes made it 16-4 and veteran Giuliano Oliviero followed up to make it 18-4.

Carlos Garcia and Machel Millwood also scored for the Blast but the Wave's early lead was too much to overcome.

In typical Blast vs. Wave fashion, the game featured 15 goals and a combined total of 25 penalty minutes. Seven Wave players scored in the match with Howes leading the way with seven points (two goals and three assists).

Baltimore and Milwaukee share a long, heated rivalry, dating back to the 1992-93 season when the teams played each other for the first time.  The Wave lead the all-time series 46-29 and the Blast lead the all-time postseason series, 9-4.  The teams have combined to win 10 of the last 14 league championships with each team claiming five titles.

The Blast are back in action on the 10th when they travel to face the Missouri Comets.
