Baltimore Earns 14-12 Overtime Win in Game One of this Weekend's Series with Syracuse
Despite a 6-0 first-quarter deficit, the Blast fought back and earned a 14-12 overtime win over the Syracuse Silver Knights Friday night. Tony Donatelli scored the game-winner, his second goal of the night, 1:28 into the extra period. With the win, the Blast improve to 13-4 and move into a tie for first place with the Milwaukee Wave.
The Blast got off to a slow start, giving up three first-quarter goals before leading-scorer Machel Millwood knocked in a goal to cut the Silver Knights lead to 6-2.
Millwood scored again to open the second quarter and Max Ferdinand scored just seconds later to tie the game at 6-6. Slavisa Ubiparapovic scored his second goal of the game to put the Silver Knights back on top 8-6 but Donatelli answered six seconds later to tie the game again, this time at 8-8.
With Stephen DeRoux in the penalty box serving a two-minute pushing penalty, Pat Healey scored Baltimore's first short-handed goal of the season to give the Blast their first lead of the night, 10-8. The lead was short-lived, however, as Syracuse's Andriy Budnyy tied the game (for the third time) in the ninth minute of the third quarter.
DeRoux scored the only goal of the final quarter, tying the game at 12-12 and forcing overtime.
Donatelli wasted no time in the extra period, scoring the game-winning goal after just 1:28 for the 14-12 victory.
The Blast and Silver Knights will play each other again Sunday afternoon at 1:30 in Syracuse.
