Baltimore – Baltimore Blast President and General Manager Kevin Healey announced today that the team has re-signed 14 players from last year’s MISL Championship Team and four new players. All players are pending league approval. The complete roster will have 20 players. The Blast will have their first game away on November 16th against the Rochester Lancers.
Defense is led by last year’s Play-Off MVP, goalkeeper, William Vanzela and 2nd Team All-League, Pat Healey. Vanzela who was second in the league in points against average was also named to the league’s All Rookie Team. Healey was second in the league in blocked shots while also recording 35 points.
Other returnees expected to make an impact on the defensive end for the Blast are Mike Deasel, Stephen DeRoux, J.T Noone, and goalkeeper, Troy Hernandez.
Offensively, the Blast returns Forwards Lucio Gonzaga and Ada
Forwards Marco Mangione, Adria
Lucas Roque is also returning after being named to the league’s All Rookie Team last year and scoring the exciting bicycle kick in last year’s final.
Head coach Danny Kelly and assistant coach David Bascome will also return for their eighth season together as the team’s coaching staff.
"There's obviously been some turnover from last year's championship winning side, and we've lost quite a bit of experience. Having said that, this is nothing new to us. I'm excited to get started with our talented core of returning players, as well as a few new additions who I think are going to fit in quite well. Our objective remains the same, and that is to be competing for a championship at the end of the season."
New to the Blast but not to the league is forward Frederico Moojen. Last year he was the leading scorer for the Wichita Wings and ranked ninth in total points in the league with 66. In addition, the Blast have signed two players from Costa Rica’s National Futsal Team, forward Diego Zuniga and defender Daniel Carrera. In keeping with their history in signing local players, the Blast have also signed Levi Houapeu. A UMBC graduate, Houapeu was nominated his Senior year for the 2010 Soccer News Net Men’s College Player of the Year for leading the conference in goals, goals per game, and points per game. After college, Houapeu went to play one year for the Philadelphia Union.
