BLAST DEFEAT SILVER KNIGHTS IN TRIPLE OVERTIME
The Blast hosted the Syracuse Silver Knights on Friday night in game 1 of the Eastern Division Championship Series. In a thrilling triple overtime battle the Blast defeated the Silver Knights 6-5.
The Blast got on top early when Pat Healey recorded his 7th goal of the season off an assist from Sofiane Tergou. At the 3:49 mark Healey would find the back of the net again off a nice assist from Lucas Roque. At the end of the first the Blast led 2-0.
Just :36 seconds into the second quarter the Blast would score again. Lucas Roque would fire a shot into the back of the net off an assist from Pat Healey. This was Roque’s 20th goal of the season and Healey’s team leading 18th assist. The Silver Knights would get on the board at the 2:21 mark with a goal from Joey Tavernese. With :30 seconds left in the half Levi Houapeu would score for the Blast off an assist from Andrew Hoxie as the Blast went into the locker room leading 4-1.
Both teams came out aggressive in the second half. The Blast would get a goal from Jinho Kim assisted by Andrew Hoxie 2 minutes into the half. This was Kim’s 7th goal of the season. At the 7:48 mark Slavisa Ubiparipovic would score for Syracuse cutting the Blast lead to 3. At the 12:16 mark after a Blast penalty for too many men on the field, Darren Toby would convert for the Silver Knights with a goal assisted by Kenardo Forbes. The Blast would enter the final quarter leading 5-3.
The fourth quarter got under way with a Syracuse shootout attempt :18 seconds into the quarter which was stopped by Blast goalie William Vanzela. Antonio Manfut would score to pull the Silver Knights within 1 and then with 23 seconds remaining Joey Tavernese would tie the game at 5. At the end of regulation the game was tied 5-5.
During the first overtime both teams went scoreless as the Blast controlled possession and recorded 6 shots while holding the Silver Knights to 0.
After a second overtime neither team was still able to find the back of the net. Blast goalkeeper William Vanzela recored 6 saves in the overtime as the game headed into the third overtime tied 5-5.
Only :42 seconds into the third overtime the Blast leading point scorer and assist leader came up big when Pat Healey set up Tony Donatelli for the game winning goal clinching game 1 of the series 6-5.
The Blast were led by team captain, Pat Healey, who recorded 2 goals and 2 assists including assisting the game winning goal in triple overtime. Blast goalkeeper, William Vanzela, recorded 14 saves in the victory.
The Blast will travel to Syracuse on Sunday, March 13th for game 2 of the series and if necessary game 3 (mini game). Kickoff is at 4:05p.m. from the Oncenter Arena.
