Blast Beat La RaZa, 14-13, on Sunday

The Baltimore Blast defeated the Monterrey La RaZa, 14-13, Sunday afternoon at the Arena Monterrey to improve to 2-1 on the season.  Lucio Gonzaga led Baltimore with three goals and one assist for his second hat trick of the season.

Despite an early 3-0 lead on a John Krause goal, La RaZa was silent for the remainder of the first quarter while the Blast mounted an explosive attack, scoring the next three goals and giving the Blast a 6-3 lead at the end of the first quarter of play.  Gonzaga, the November MISL Offensive Player of the Month, scored at the 3:28 mark and again at the 4:09 mark to cut La RaZa's lead to 3-2 and then to give the Blast the 4-3 advantage.  Team captain Robbie Aristodemo scored his first goal of the season at 11:12 to extend Baltimore's lead to 6-3.

In the second quarter, Gonzaga recorded his third goal of the game, for his second hat trick of the season, and Machel Millwood scored to put the Blast on top, 10-3.  Victor Quiroz scored for La RaZa with less than 90 seconds remaining in the half to cut Baltimore's lead to 10-5.

Monterrey scored the first two goals of the second half, with Byron Alvarez cutting the Blast lead to 10-7 in the fifth minute and Krause scoring his second goal of the day to make it 10-9 in the 12th minute.  In just the second game of his career, Blast rookie forward Max Ferdinand scored his first professional goal to put the Blast on top, 12-9, and Giuliano Celenza followed up less than 30 seconds later, extending the Blast lead to 14-9.  La RaZa fought back, however, with Genoni Martinez ending the quarter with a goal that cut the Blast lead to 14-11.

After 12 scoreless minutes in the final quarter, Mark Ughy scored to put La RaZa within one point, 14-13, and Quiroz came on the field 20 seconds later as Monterrey's sixth attacker.  Sagu and the Blast defense held on for the final 2:36 and emerged with the 14-13 victory, earning the team's second-ever win in Monterrey.
