Wave Earns 13-10 victory over the Blast

The Milwaukee Wave defeated the Baltimore Blast, 13-10, Saturday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena, bringing the Blast winless streak to three straight games.  The win moves the Wave into a tie with the Rockford Rampage for first place in the MISL and the Blast (5-5) fall into third place, a half game behind the Rampage and Wave.  The Blast and Wave will face each other again on January 30th at 1st Mariner Arena.

Despite an early 6-2 lead, the Blast were unable to match Milwaukee's three-point goal effort, fell behind 13-8 in the fourth quarter and were unable to battle back.  Giuliano Celenza led Baltimore with two goals (four points), including the late goal that made it 13-10 but MISL leading scorer Marco Terminesi led the way for the Wave with a three-point goal and a two-point goal to clinch the victory.  There were 17 minutes of combined penalties in the game, 15 of which came in the second half, 11 of those 15 were in the fourth quarter.

After nine scoreless minutes of play to open the game, Adrian Bumbut gave Baltimore a 2-0 lead.  The lead lasted less than 90 seconds as Terminesi knocked the ball off the boards to himself and scored to tie the game at 2-2.  Lucio Gonzaga regained the Blast lead late in the quarter, giving the Blast a 4-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Celenza took advantage of a power-play to open the second quarter, scoring a goal to extend Baltimore's lead to 6-2 but the Wave dominated the game from that point, battling back to take a 7-6 lead and scoring three total three-point goals on the night.  Giuliano Oliviero knocked in a rebound to bring the Wave within one goal, 6-4, heading into halftime.

The third quarter featured three goals and three lead changes as the Wave took its first lead of the game, 7-6, on a Kyt Selaidopoulos's three-point power-play goal at 1:31.  Blast defender Jonathan Greenfield regained the Blast lead at 8-7 in the 14th minute but Terminesi scored his second goal of the night a minute later to give the Wave the 10-8 lead to start the fourth quarter.

While there were only two goals late in the final quarter, a three-pointer from Ian Bennett to make it 13-8 and a sixth attacker goal from Celenza to cut the Wave lead to 13-10, there were four penalties and plenty of action in the final eight minutes.  The penalty frenzy started at 7:21 when Lucio Gonzaga was sent off to serve a five-minute misconduct, followed by matching blue cards to Carlos Garcia and Selaidopoulos that forced the teams to four vs. four.  Another blue card to JP Rodrigues gave the Blast a four vs. three advantage, and then a five vs. four advantage, neither of which Baltimore was able to take advantage of.

Notes:
- Forward Machel Millwood (ankle) and midfielder Scott Buete (foot/hand) did not travel to Milwaukee this weekend due to injury.
