The Blast Hold on to 1st Place with 20-9 Win Over the Wave

Led by Robbie Aristodemo, the Baltimore Blast held on to first place and defeated the second-place Milwaukee Wave, 20-9 Sunday afternoon at at 1st Mariner Arena.  With just four regular season games remaining, the Blast are one and a half games in front of the Wave in the fight for the regular season title.  The Blast and Wave have both secured spots in the 2011 MISL postseason and are now battling for the regular season championship and the right to host the 2011 MISL Championship Game.  The Omaha Vipers, Chicago Riot and Missouri Comets are still fighting for the third and final postseason berth.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Blast didn't waste any time building an 8-0 lead.  Machel Millwood scored a three-point goal in the second minute of the second quarter and Lucio Gonzaga scored another three-point goal in the seventh minute.  Aristodemo scored again, just 13 seconds after Gozaga, to make it 8-0.   Joe Hammes scored the Wave's first goal of the game, at the 8:35 mark to make it 8-2.

Despite a two-point power-play goal from Hewerton Moreira at the 7:00 mark of the third quarter, the Blast dominated the quarter, scoring three goals to extend Baltimore's lead to 15-4.  Aristodemo scored first, followed by Pat Morris and then Max Ferdinand.

Aristodemo completed his hat trick in the fourth quarter with a short-handed three-point goal against the Wave's sixth-attacker offense.  Aristodemo also scored a short-handed goal in Friday's 14-10 win over the Vipers but this one, the Blast's fourth three-point goal of the game, set a Blast record for most three-pointers in a game.  Neto added a goal at the 6:25 mark to make it 20-4 but the Wave scored the last two goals of the game, both with the sixth attacker on the field, with Travis MacKenzie scoring at 10:17 and Troy Dusosky adding a three-point goal at 13:44.

Today was the fifth of six games between the Blast and the Milwaukee Wave this season. The Blast leads the season series, 4-1, and has won the last four games between the clubs. The Blast and Wave will play each other one more time after tonight (March 6 in Milwaukee).  Baltimore and Milwaukee share a long history, dating back to the 1992-93 season when the teams played each other for the first time. The Wave leads the all-time regular season series, 44-28, though the Blast is 9-3 against the Wave in the postseason. The teams have combined to win nine of the last 13 league championships (Baltimore has won five; Milwaukee has won four).

* The seven-game win streak is the team's longest win streak since the eight-game streak during the 2006-07 season.
* Machel Millwood recorded the 300th point of his career.
* The Blast scored four three-point goals in the match to set a team record for most three-point goals in a game.
* The Blast will play in Chicago on the 27th.
