MISL Releases Updated 2011-12 Schedule; Blast to Open Season at Home on November 12

Baltimore Blast President and General Manager Kevin Healey announced today that the team has re-signed 10 players from last year’s squad, pending league approval.  The returning players are forwards Machel Millwood, Adauto Neto, Max Ferdinand, Adrian Bumbut and Lucio Gonzaga; midfielders Pat Healey and Scott Buete; defenders Mike Lookingland and Carlos Garcia and goalkeeper Sagu.  The Blast will open the 2011-12 MISL season on November 12 against the Syracuse Silver Knights at 1st Mariner Arena.

Head coach and 2011 MISL Coach of the Year Danny Kelly and assistant coach David Bascome will also return for their sixth season as the team’s coaching staff.  Sagu, the 2011 MISL Goalkeeper of the Year and All-MISL First-Team selection, will be back for his eighth season with the Blast, along with three-time champion Machel Millwood who is also entering his eighth season in Baltimore.  Sagu was named Goalkeeper of the Month three times last season and allowed only 82 goals in 18 games.

“We've had some key players from the core of our championship winning teams in Giuliano Celenza, Robbie Aristodemo, and Billy Nelson retire and move on to different careers,” said Blast head coach Danny Kelly.  “We've also lost perennial all-star Pat Morris to the collegiate coaching ranks. But in the next few weeks we hope to announce some key new signings to go along with the quality of our returning players like Millwood, Neto and Ferdinand to name a few, to help us get back to where we want to be...competing for the MISL champioship.”

Garcia, a forward turned defender, will enter his ninth season in a Blast uniform and take over the role of the team’s most tenured player.  Lookingland and Healey, 2011 All-MISL Second-Team selections, will also be back on the field for the 2011-12 season.  Lookingland is entering his seventh season and Healey, the 2009 NISL Rookie of the Year, will be playing in his fourth season with the Blast.  Lookingland ranked third in the MISL with 35 blocks last season while Healey led the Blast in points last season with 48 and set career highs in all scoring categories.  Neto, a member of two Blast Championship teams, and Buete are back for their fifth seasons and Gonzaga and Bumbut will enter their fourth seasons with the Blast.  Ferdinand, the 2010 MISL Rookie of the Year, matched his rookie season scoring output and added six assists last season.  He also ranked second on the Blast with 43 points in 2010-11.

In MISL news, an updated 2011-12 schedule has been released.  The new schedule reflects the recent departure of the Chicago franchise that will not play this season but will begin play in 2012-13.  The Blast went 15-5 last season en route to the 2011 MISL regular season championship and lost to the Milwaukee Wave in the Championship Game.
