BLAST ADDS THREE PLAYERS TO 2011-12 ROSTER
Training Camp to Open Monday at Du Burns Arena
Baltimore Blast President and General Manager Kevin Healey announced that the team has added three players to the team’s 2011-12 roster, pending league approval. Forwards Matt Watson and Warren Ukah are returning to Baltimore and defender/midfielder Stephen DeRoux will make his Blast debut this season. The Blast will begin training camp Monday at Du Burns Arena and will open the season on November 12 against the Syracuse Silver Knights at 1st Mariner Arena.
Returning for his fifth season with the Blast, Watson was part of Baltimore’s 2008 and 2009 Championship teams. A 2011 NASL Best 11 pick, he has spent the last four seasons with the Carolina RailHawks who were the 2011 regular season champions. Watson also played outdoor for the Richmond Kickers and was named All-League in 2007 and helped lead the team to the USL-2 Championship in 2006. The 2004 and 2005 America East Conference Midfielder of the Year out of UMBC, he was also a First-Team NSCAA/Adidas All-South Atlantic Region selection in his last season of collegiate play after recording three goals and leading the Retrievers with seven assists.
Ukah, who is returning for his second season in Baltimore, began his indoor career with the Milwaukee Wave in 2007-08 and was named to the All-Rookie Team. He recorded five goals and eight assists for 19 points in 17 games last season. An eight-year veteran of professional outdoor soccer, Ukah scored two goals in 21 games this summer with FC Tampa Bay of the NASL.
DeRoux spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons with the Montreal Impact and was named All-League Second-Team and Impact newcomer of the Year in 2009 en route to the USL-1 Championship. He was named All-League First-Team in 2008 after scoring one goal and adding two assists in 29 games for the Minnesota Thunder. DeRoux signed a developmental contract with DC United in 2005 and played 10 total games for the club. He attended High Point High School in Beltsville, MD where he earned Washington Post All-Met honors in 2001. DeRoux went on to record 15 goals and 26 assists during his time at Prince George’s Community College where he was named D3 Junior College First-Team, All-Mid East and NSCAA Second-Team All-America.
“We are excited to announce the return of Watson and Ukah as well as the addition of DeRoux, said Blast head coach Danny Kelly. “Matt's strength, versatility and pace have made him an integral part of the team and Warren provides us with a quality target forward with toughness and skill who continues to get better. Stephen gives us another versatile player with a good work rate and skillful left foot that will cause opposing defenses problems.”
Training camp will open on Monday, October 24 at Du Burns Arena. All Blast practices that are held at Du Burns Arena during the preseason and regular season are open to the public, with no admission fee. Practice times and location are subject to change; please call the Blast office to confirm.
