Donatelli, Millwood Named Team of the Week

The Major Indoor Soccer League announced that Missouri Comets defender Leo Gibson has been named the league’s Player of the Week for the 12th week of the 2012-13 season. Gibson had a standout 16-point performance on Saturday night against the Rochester Lancers, setting a new league record for most points in a single game.

With the absence of Byron Alvarez from the Comets lineup, Gibson was moved into attack against the Lancers, and made the most of his opportunity. Following Ryan Junge’s opening goal, Gibson recorded a first-quarter hat trick before the seven-minute mark, including one 3-point goal. After assisting Vahid Assadpour’s second-quarter goal, Gibson had eight points at the break.

Gibson struck again from 3-point range for the Comets’ only goal of the third quarter, and then added two more goals and an assist in the fourth as the Comets wrapped up a 30-17 victory. Gibson’s 16-point game broke the previous mark, held by Alvarez, who had 13 points against Milwaukee last season.

In addition to Gibson, the Milwaukee Wave and Baltimore Blast saw two players named to the MISL Team of the Week, with Milwaukee’s stout defense being represented by goalkeeper Marcel Feenstra and defender Joe Hammes. Feenstra recorded 14 saves on Saturday night as the Wave took a 9-5 victory against the Chicago Soul, while Hammes had three points in the Wave’s come-from-behind win the previous night in Chicago.

Baltimore’s Machel Millwood also earned selection after his nine-point weekend helped the Blast take a pair of victories against the Syracuse Silver Knights. He was joined by Tony Donatelli, who had three goals in two games, including the overtime game-winner as the Blast took a 14-12 win.

Rochester’s Mauricio Salles completed the Team of the Week, earning his second consecutive selection after recording 11 points in a pair of games this weekend. Salles had a five-point game in the Lancers’ 19-10 win against Wichita on Friday, and the added another six points the following night against Missouri, to move into second place in the MISL scoring leaders.

The 2012-13 MISL season continues Friday night as the Baltimore Blast host the Rochester Lancers at 7:35 p.m. ET at 1st Mariner Arena, and the Milwaukee Wave visit the Wichita Wings at 8:35 p.m. ET at Hartman Arena.

Baltimore remains at home on Saturday night as it hosts the Missouri Comets at 7:35 p.m. ET, with the Comets then making the trip to Rochester’s Blue Cross Arena for a Sunday afternoon contest with the Lancers at 1 p.m. ET.

The Chicago Soul also face a two-game road trip, first travelling to meet the Wichita Wings on Saturday night at 8:35 p.m. ET before heading to Milwaukee to face the Wave at U.S. Cellular Arena on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET.
