Gonzaga Named to the MISL Team of the Week

The Major Indoor Soccer League announced that Chicago Soul midfielder Carlos Farias has been named the league’s Player of the Week for the 13th week of the 2012-13 season. Farias had 20 points in three games this past week, setting a new league record for 3-pointers in a game in the process.

Farias had a standout performance on January 21 as the Soul moved into the playoff places for the first time this season with a 23-14 victory against the Wichita Wings. Farias played a key role as the Soul took a 15-0 lead in the second quarter, controlling the tempo of the game while recording a 3-point goal and two assists before the break.

He then scored all three of the Soul’s second-half goals, ending the Wings’ 12-0 run early in the fourth quarter and then striking twice from 3-point range to seal the victory. Farias’ three 3-pointers are a current-era record for the MISL.

Farias was at the center again on Saturday night as he had a five-point game in the Soul’s 15-12 win, again against the Wings. Farias played a key role in Chicago’s 11-point second quarter, scoring another 3-point goal and recording assists on a pair of goals as Chicago took a 15-4 halftime lead. He then scored again on Sunday, giving him 20 points for the week, and now leads the MISL with seven 3-point goals this season.

Joining Farias on the Team of the Week were a pair of players from the Milwaukee Wave, with Marcel Feenstra and Luan Oliveira being honored after helping their side’s winning streak reach 14 games. Feenstra recorded 14 saves on Friday night as the Wave edged out Wichita, and Oliveira had a four-goal game to lead his side past the Soul.

Missouri’s Leo Gibson is honored again after his strong run of form continued. Gibson had a hat trick as the Comets took a 14-11 victory against the Baltimore Blast on Saturday, becoming the first visiting team to win at 1st Mariner Arena this season.

Rounding out the team are the Rochester Lancers’ Doug Miller, who had an 11-point game as the Lancers defeated the Comets on Sunday, and Baltimore’s Lucio Gonzaga, who recorded 10 points in two games as the Blast remained in second place in the standings.
