February NISL Players of the Month

Offensive: Machel Millwood, Baltimore Blast
Blast forward Machel Millwood led the Blast to with 14 points in the month of February.  He scored one goal in the 9-4 win over Rockford on the 20th (his first game back after missing three games with an ankle injury) then recorded 12 points the following night in the 23-9 win over the Twisters.  Millwood, a two-time NISL Player of the Week selection, leads the Blast and is tied to rank fourth in the NISL with 39 total points and he is tied to lead the NISL 15 two-point goals.    

Defensive: PJ Wakefield, Baltimore Blast
Blast forward and team captain PJ Wakefield led Blast defenders and ranked third on the team with 10 points in three games in February.  A Baltimore local and seven-year veteran, Wakefield recorded one goal in each of the three games, including the game-winner in the 9-4 win over the Rockford Rampage on the 20th.  In addition to his 10 points (one three-point goal, two two-point goals and three assists) in February, he added two blocks.  Wakefield ranks sixth on the Blast with 23 total points this season and leads the team with 16 blocks.  Led by Wakefield, the Blast defense leads the NISL by allowing just 94 points for an average of 7.2 points per game.

Goalkeeper: Peter Pappas, Philadelphia KiXX
Pappas, a native of Toronto, Ontario, posted a 2-1 overall record and an impressive 6.96 goals against average in the month of February.  The 13-year-veteran, one of only two players with the KiXX since the team’s inception in 1996, earned consecutive victories over the Massachusetts Twisters (2/7) and the Rockford Rampage (2/21) to open the month, before dropping a 4-2 decision to the Rampage at the MetroCentre on February 22.  The Philadelphia University graduate holds a 8-6 overall record and a 9.81 goals against average, ranking third among all NISL goalkeepers. Pappas was also named the League’s Goalkeeper for the Month for his performance throughout January.

About the National Indoor Soccer League

The National Indoor Soccer League was launched in September of 2008 and consists of five founding members; the Baltimore Blast, La RaZa de Monterrey, Philadelphia KiXX, Rockford Rampage and the Massachusetts Twisters.  The NISL has formed a working relationship with the United Soccer Leagues (USL) and recently received provisional membership in the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).

The NISL kicked off its inaugural season on November 15th and will continue through the end of this month, with the playoffs taking place the first two weeks of April.  The 2009 NISL Championship Series will consist of three of the five NISL clubs competing in two rounds, the Semifinal Round (first weekend of April) and the Championship Series Final (second week of April).  The first-place team will get an automatic bye to host the Championship Game and the second- and third-place teams will play a home-and-home series with the winner advancing to the Finals.
