DANNY KELLY NAMED 2010-11 MISL COACH OF THE YEAR
The Blast Will Appear in their Sixth Championship Game in Nine Years
Wednesday, March 23, 2011 - The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today that Baltimore Blast head coach Danny Kelly has been voted the 2010-11 MISL Coach of the Year. Kelly led the Blast to a 15-5 regular season record and the team’s sixth Championship Game appearance in nine years. The Blast will host the Milwaukee Wave in the 2011 MISL Championship Game Friday at 1st Mariner Arena.
The Blast started the season on a five-game win streak and went on an eight-game win streak from January 21 to February 27 en route to the regular season title and a first-round postseason bye. Kelly’s Blast boasts four All-MISL players, the Goalkeeper and Defender of the Year and nine of the league’s top 25 scorers. In Kelly’s five-plus seasons as the team’s coach, the Blast has a 76-47 regular season record and a 10-4 postseason record; this is his second Coach of the Year honor.
Kelly was named head coach of the Blast in May of 2006 after leading the team to the 2006 MISL Championship while serving as the interim head coach. He has since led the team to additional championships in 2008 and 2009 and to this season’s championship appearance. After a highly successful 14-year career, Kelly retired from the playing field at the end of the 2005-06 season. He began his professional indoor soccer career with the Harrisburg Heat in 1991 and joined the Blast prior to the 1998-99 season. In eight seasons in Baltimore he compiled 329 points (106 goals and 136 assists) and still ranks eighth on the team’s all-time scoring list (329 points). A three-time league All-Star, Kelly represented the Blast in the 2006 MISL All-Star Game and, in his final season, led the team’s defenders with 22 points (four goals, 18 assists).
To determine winners of the postseason awards, members of the media, MISL coaches and team personnel were asked to cast votes for first-place (worth five points), second-place (three points), and third-place (one point) for MISL Coach of the Year.
