Gonzaga, Lookingland Named Team of the Week

Milwaukee’s Vorberg Named Player of the Week
Lucio Gonzaga and Mike Lookingland Named to the MISL Team of the Week

The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Milwaukee Wave goalkeeper Nick Vorberg had been named the league’s Player of the Week for the seventh week of the 2012-13 season. Vorberg recorded 30 saves on 31 shots as the Wave took a 9-2 victory against the Chicago Soul on Friday night.

Vorberg shone particularly brightly in the opening half as the Soul carried the majority of the play. Chicago, looking to take victory against its regional rival, outshot the Wave 47-24 in the game, with Vorberg recording 19 of his saves in the opening 30 minutes.

Vorberg’s play allowed the Wave to stay in the game as they edged to a 7-0 lead with one goal in each of the first three quarters. Carlos Farias spoiled Vorberg’s shutout bid 4:46 into the fourth quarter, but it was the only goal the Milwaukee goalkeeper conceded as he lowered his points-against average to 6.38 and raised his save percentage to .840.

A pair of players from the Baltimore Blast and Syracuse Silver Knights each earned berths on the MISL Team of the Week, with the Blast’s Lucio Gonzaga and Mike Lookingland each earning nods as they helped their side move to 9-0 this season in a 15-9 victory against the Missouri Comets on Saturday night.

Gonzaga led the Blast’s balanced attack, finishing with a pair of goals, one from 3-point range, moving him to 18 points this season. Lookingland recorded a goal, an assist and a block to continue his standout defensive season as the Blast held the Comets scoreless for the opening three quarters of the game.

The Silver Knights’ Andriy Budnyy and Nelson Santan were also selected, with Budnyy recording a hat trick in his side’s 18-8 win against the Comets on Friday night. Santana, meanwhile, continued his standout season as he recorded a pair of assists and proved key in turning defense into attack throughout the contest. Santana now leads all defenders with 21 points this season.

Completing the Team of the Week was the Rochester Lancers’ Doug Miller, who had a five-point night as his side maintained its outstanding home form with a 10-6 victory against the Wichita Wings. Miller leads the MISL with 42 points, with Saturday’s win the fourth out of five for the Lancers at the Blue Cross Arena this season.

The 2012-13 MISL season continues on Friday night as the Chicago Soul host the Baltimore Blast at 8:30 p.m. ET at the Sears Centre. Also on Friday, Missouri visits Wichita as the two rivals meet for the third time this season at 8:35 p.m. ET.

Saturday night sees a rematch of the past two MISL Championship Series as the Blast visit the Milwaukee Wave at U.S. Cellular Arena at 7 p.m. ET. The I-90 Rivalry is also rekindled as the Rochester Lancers host the Syracuse Silver Knights at the Blue Cross Arena looking for their first win of the season against their New York State rivals.
