The Blast kicked off their 34th season of professional indoor soccer with a win in Rochester last Saturday night against the Lancers. The Blast, who were the 2012-13 MISL Champions is anchored by 15 returners from last year’s squad including Captain and 2012 MISL Defender of the Year, Mike Lookingland, 2012-13 2nd Team All-MISL, Pat Healey, and Play-Off MVP, Goalie, William Vanzela..
Season Opener Recap
Blast Forward Marco Mangione and Goalkeeper William Vanzela were both named to the MISL Team of the week. Mangione led the Blast with a game high 3 goals and 7 points while Vanzela recorded 13 saves out of 17 shots. Pat Healey’s 3 blocks, 4 points and J.T. Noone’s impact on the defensive end also landed them both Honorable Mention accolades.
Battle of Champions
Both the Blast and Wave have won their fair share of championships. The Blast have won 7 total and 6 have been in the past 11 years. The Wave have won 6 total and all have been in the last 16 years. On Saturday, the Blast will be celebrating their 7th Championship win by the unfurling of the Banner at their Home Opener.
Welcome to the Blast
In addition to the returning players, the Blast roster also includes five newcomers. Forward Freddy Moojen, new to the Blast but not to the league played two seasons with the Wichita Wings. In his 2012-13 Season, Moojen was Wichita ‘s team captain and led his team in points and goals. Keeping with tradition, the Blast bring in two Maryland natives, Levi Houapeau and Drew Yates. Last, we welcome Daniel Carrera and Diego Zuniga, who both played on Costa Rica’s National Futsal Team.
The Wave returns several key players from their 2012-13 roster including Ian Bennett who was recently named the MISL Player of the week . Bennett had a 5-goal performance in his season opener, including the game winning goal in OT. In addition to Bennett, the Wave returns Luan Oliveira and Marcio Leite who also received Honorable Mention accolades for their performance in their Season Opener against the Comets. Last season, Oliveira was named to the All-MISL 2nd Team and All-Rookie team. Also returning for the Wave, Goalkeeper Nick Vorberg who was an All-MISL 1st Team selection last season. The Wave is coached by Keith Tozer who has a regular season record of 430-234. Tozer has compiled more victories in the MISL than any other coach in history.
