Baltimore – Baltimore Blast President and General Manager, Kevin Healey, announced today that the team has re-signed five players from last year’s squad.   The returning players include forwards Diego Zuniga, Levi Houapeu, Jamie Darvill, midfielder Max Ferdinand and defender Mike Deasel.  In addition, the team has signed Brazilian midfielder Jonatas Melo.  The Baltimore Blast will be playing in the newly formed Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) this coming season which will have 23 teams throughout the United States and Mexico.

“Being able to keep the majority of our core together is critical to maintaining our success as an organization.  Also, we are continually looking to bring in talented players to help us achieve our goals.” said Blast head coach Danny Kelly.   Kelly added “With the recent signings of this group of players, I feel we will continue to be a club that will have the ability to compete for a championship in the MASL this year.”

Forward Diego Zuniga will be entering his second season of professional indoor soccer with the Blast.  Last year, Zuniga scored 10 goals and recorded 6 assists for 27 points for the Blast.  He was recognized for his efforts by the league as he was named to the 2013-2014 MISL all-rookie team.  Diego is also a member of the Costa Rica National Futsal Team.

Forward Levi Houapeu also will be starting his second season of professional indoor soccer with the Blast.  Last year, Houapeu scored 4 goals and had 3 assists for 11 points.  This past summer, Levi played outdoor soccer for the Rochester Rhinos in the USL Pro League.  Houapeu played college soccer at UMBC.

Midfielder Max Ferdinand begins his sixth season with the Blast.  Ferdinand is coming off an excellent season scoring 17 goals and recording 6 assists for a total of 43 points.  Max was tied for second on the Blast in total goals last year.  Ferdinand was named 1st team all-MISL for the 2011-2012 season and was the league Rookie of the Year in 2010.

Mike Deasel, who is a product of Loyola University, is entering his 4th season with the Blast.  Deasel is a solid defender who also scored 2 goals and had 2 assists last year for six points.

Forward Jamie Darvill returns for his third year with the Blast.  Darvill, who also played at Loyola University, is returning after being injured for most of last season.

The Blast are also pleased to introduce Jonatas Melo to the Blast team.  Melo is a midfielder out of Sao Paulo, Brazil.  Melo most recently was playing professional futsal in Italy for Pesaro.
